What is credit, why are credits given, and how are they managed in certificate, bachelor’s,
master’s, and PhD programs? 🗨🤔
💠 In the early 1800s, universities did not allow students to choose their preferred subjects and
instead required them to follow a fixed curriculum. Later, the credit system was established at
Harvard University under the management of President Charles W. Eliot, with the aim of
increasing students’ enthusiasm for learning a wider range of subjects. Over time, the credit
system became internationally recognized and widely adopted around the world.
💠 The credit system was created to encourage students’ passion for learning, record their
academic activities, and allow students to study flexibly based on their interests through earned
credits.
💠 Moreover, credits allow students to transfer between local and international universities.
However, credit standards may differ depending on each university’s policies. In such cases,
students may be required to take additional preparatory courses to meet the new university’s
requirements.
💠 Generally, universities award credits based on the following criteria (with some variations):
● Attendance
● Number of tests taken
● Engagement and interest in the subject
💠 BEI, which uses Zoom live classes and the Moodle platform for teaching and learning, also
awards credits based on the Carnegie Unit standard. According to this system, 45 learning
hours are equivalent to 1 credit.
